Old wellies recycled into modern art
The Environment Agency and Newcastle based architects Xsite have joined forces to produce a work of sculptural art in the form of ten large cubes that will travel the course of the River Tyne throughout 2008, reflecting the life cycle of the salmon on its year long journey from the river to the sea. The Tyne Salmon Trail as it is known, was launched in December 2007 and the final four cubes (including one covered in discarded rubber wellies) were unveiled last week.
The cubes are beautiful pieces of sculpture that use a range of materials reflecting the beauty of the salmon and the surrounding landscape, such as wooden fins, shimmering scales and carved wooden dowels, while also using man made materials such as punctured steel and recycled bottles and wellies to describe the journey and the changing colours/texture of the salmon.
