Umbrella and welly sales surge on wet weather

Retail sales might be sinking as cash-strapped consumers tighten their belts but that Great British summer staple, the umbrella, is flying off the shelves.

Sales of Wellington boots, which usually only pick up in October, are also doing well. Online retailer Welly Warehouse has had to employ more staff to manage the early surge in demand, while M&S said sales of wellies and ladies' knee-high boots almost doubled on last year.

By comparison, total sales across M&S, excluding VAT, inched up by just 3.2pc in the thirteen weeks to July 2.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said last week that its figures show the value of sales across the UK modestly higher in July, but that did not represent any growth in volume of sales.

Stephen Robertson, BRC director-general, said: "All the growth in sales values came from inflation and January's increase in VAT; people are actually buying fewer goods than a year ago."

Britons appear to be drowning their sorrows as a result of the wet weather, and indulging in typically cold-weather drinks.

Marks & Spencer said sales of red wine picked up 21.6pc for the last two months; while sales of rosé ticked up just 7pc. Meanwhile, the company's best-selling product last week was tea.

The washout has dampened spirits at other companies. Sales at Britvic dropped 8pc in July as customers spurned cold drinks.

B&Q saw a similar washout, with sales of outdoor seasonal products such as barbecues and garden furniture down by more than 20pc.

The figures should come as no surprise. Met Office data show that rainfall for June and July was 13pc above average.

What do you do in yours?

Hunter have this week announced a brand partnership with musician, writer and farmer Alex James.  The former Blur bass player will be working with the brand throughout 2010, celebrating a series of annual events across the country. Hunter is a brand with a natural affiliation to music, fashion and farming, which extends to the partnership with Alex James and his vision for urban and country life: "Since I've moved to the country I've realised that you can't beat a beautiful, life affirming walk through icy silver and green countryside.  I even love the cold and wet.  But having a a pair of Hunters on still reminds me of the fun of the city and Hunters are perfect for the lifestyle I have now on every level." Hunter's Managing Director Peter Taylor says, "We are delighted to be working with Alex.  He is a great ambassador for Hunter who has the ability to combine style, creativity and a great British sense of fun!  Like Hunter he is as comfortable celebrating life in the muddy fields of a music festival as he is working on his farm or walking through a city square."

In Style Magazine's feature on "Festival Fever" this July reports on how to survive the summer music fests according to celebs such as Alexandra Burke and Gabriella Cilmi. Alexandra Burke is pictured in her Hunter Carnaby Boa Snakeskin wellies - she's opted for the short version which looks great with hotpants and a fringed top.  She also advises packing spare socks because they are likely to get wet and muddy. Ellie Goulding, winner of the Critics' Choice at thie year's Brit Awards has also opted for a Hunter wellington - the exclusive Jimmy Choo boot produced by Hunter for their second summer season.   She's pictured in over the knee socks and a loose jersey dress with the exclusive crocodile effect wellies. The list of celebrities photographed in Hunter wellingtons continues to get longer and longer - and with Glastonbury taking place this coming weekend the magazines are sure to be packed with images of these iconic boots over coming weeks.  If you're off to a festival this summer and want to join the A-listers you know what you've got to get on your feet!

The Daily Mail online have published an article today about the Wedge Welly - only they appear to have rather missed the point.  Reporting on the popularity of wellies as a fashion accessory over the last few years they assert, "But now, things have just got silly.  We don't know who these are aimed at, but anyone seen wearing them should be mocked." The writer clearly fails to understand the market - we've been selling these for over 12 months now and their popularity is only growing.  Lots of people enjoy the ability to express their individuality with the funky colours and patterns the Wedge Welly is available in, and the extra height they afford the wearer is immensely popular with younger clients and shorter ladies. They go on to say, "In any case, once you're knee-deep in festival mud, no one will be able to see what's on your feet.."   True - but not everybody that's  buying wellies is even thinking of going to a festival.  People regularly wear wellies for shopping in town these days - the humble welly is now a boot for all occasions, and it is precisely because of designs such as the Wedge Welly that this is the case. So the conclusion can only be - sorry Daily Mail, you've got it wrong this time.

It's Festival Time again!  BBC Radio One's Big Weekend kicked off the season a couple of weekends ago in North Wales, and with Download and the Isle of Wight Festivals this coming weekend we're already in full swing. If you're heading off to a music festival this year then don't forget to pack the essentials - including the all-important wellies.   With the British summer the way it usually is, let's face it, you're gonna need them!  Our warehouse is packed to the hilt with festival must-haves from Hunter, but don't delay because old favourites such as the Hunter Original Black always sell out fast at this time of year.  If it has to be a particular style or colour then we advise buying early to avoid disappointment. And don't worry - if you suddenly realise at the last minute that your old wellies have got holes in, we are offering next day delivery as standard, so if you order before midday Monday to Thursday your boots will be with you the very next day.   We know how important it is and we'll do our absolute best to get them to you.

After the popularity of our Bargain Bin last year we're once again offering end of lines, customer returns with damaged/no packaging, shop soiled pairs, and all the other odds and ends that we have knocking around in corners of the warehouse - all at knock-down prices on our new Bargain Barrow page. Stock is offered strictly on a first come first served basis, and new lines will be added daily over the next few weeks.  Everything must go - but it's for a limited period only, so if you see something you fancy then snap it up quick because it won't be there for long!

Last week's Sunday Times reports on the recent battle of the boots between Hunter Boot Ltd and D Jacobson & Sons, who have released similar snake print wellies. Hunter objected to Jacobson's new wellington which they saw as bearing more than a passing resemblance to their own new Carnaby Boa boot, hailed as the 'sexiest Hunter boot to date'. A legal tussle ensued between the two companies who have since struck a confidential deal between themselves over the issue. To see what all the fuss was about click here to view details of the new Hunter Carnaby Boa.
