The Daily Mail online have published an article today about the Wedge Welly - only they appear to have rather missed the point. Reporting on the popularity of wellies as a fashion accessory over the last few years they assert, “But now, things have just got silly. We don’t know who these are aimed at, but anyone seen wearing them should be mocked.”
The writer clearly fails to understand the market - we’ve been selling these for over 12 months now and their popularity is only growing. Lots of people enjoy the ability to express their individuality with the funky colours and patterns the Wedge Welly is available in, and the extra height they afford the wearer is immensely popular with younger clients and shorter ladies.
They go on to say, “In any case, once you’re knee-deep in festival mud, no one will be able to see what’s on your feet..” True - but not everybody that’s buying wellies is even thinking of going to a festival. People regularly wear wellies for shopping in town these days - the humble welly is now a boot for all occasions, and it is precisely because of designs such as the Wedge Welly that this is the case.
So the conclusion can only be - sorry Daily Mail, you’ve got it wrong this time.
